The Memorial Day Murph is one of the coolest events CrossFit has going.
For those that aren’t familiar, the Memorial Day Murph event is done once per year on or around Memorial Day to celebrate the lives of all of our fallen soldiers. The HeroWod name sake belongs to Michael Murphy. Murph was a Navy Lieutenant who was killed in action in Afghanistan on June 28th, 2005. His heroic effort was showcased in the movie Lone Survivor staring Mark Wahlberg and Murph was played by actor Taylor Kitsch.
The event its self is quite grueling and consists of the following in this order.
1 Mile Run
100 Pull Ups
200 Push Ups
1 Mile Run
The RX version of this WOD has this performed by an individual wearing a 20 lb weighted vest however for most Murphers, it’s split up and done by teams not wearing vests.
This workout typically takes people 30 minutes to an hour to complete and will burn approximately 600 -1000 calories based on several different factors.
If you have some place local that you can participate in this kind of event, definitely do it. It’s an awesome workout and it’s a ton of fun when participating with others. If you can’t make it to a local event, try the workout at your gym or at home…..and let us know how much fun it was
