Is Cortisol Killing Your Physique?
As usual we’ll keep this simple and sprinkle in some of the tips we tell our training clients. So what is cortisol? Cortisol is a chemical released by the body during stressful situations that help create quick energy and temporarily limit the activity of other organs that aren’t needed during these “fight or flight” periods.
Optimal cortisol levels are necessary for bodily function but excess production of cortisol can lead to weakening of muscles, tumors, diabetes, weight gain and fatigue.
We all experience an uptick in cortisol levels after exercise but prolonged levels of high stress that we experience in our daily lives from work, our relationships and our environment can cause an excess of cortisol that can lead to these negative effects including your weight gain.
So what do you do? First thing is to recognize the areas in which you take on the most amount of stress. If it’s at work, then try to circumvent the stressful situations by putting things in better perspective. You can also reduce stress by working on your relationships with others and finding more ways to connect. Personal emotional stress ultimately comes from a deep concern for personal benefit, with this awareness, it makes it easier to let things go and continue with a happier flow to life.
For your physique’s sake, become less stressed and you’ll be on a quicker path to achieving your fitness goals.
